This year, a select group of retailers have band together to support a very important local and sustainable event called the Living Green Expo. We call ourselves the “Official Living Green Grocers” - we’re your Minnesota-born neighborhood grocers and co-ops .Our mission is to help you love organic and local food as much as we do simply because it’s the yummiest way to go green.

The Living Green Expo offers easy tips on how to live green, dress green, play green and of course, eat green. Don’t worry, you won’t come out of the Expo sporting a shade of green, but you will come out knowing how to live more green, more sustainably and with fun and flair.

You’ve been cooped up with all the doors and windows tightly closed. You need a big, deep breath of clean air. Time to let the fresh air in and clean away traces of winter.

But wait! Don’t grab just any cleaning product to wipe away that grime. You might pollute your house with harmful chemicals. Try greening your cleaning with natural home cleaners. They work great and leave your home looking and smelling naturally clean.

Every month we publish our Organic and Natural magazine and offer it to our customers for FREE. The magazine is always loaded with new item information, health and wellness articles, terrific recipes, and we showcase more than 30 organic and natural brands that are on sale for the entire month.

Here’s just a little of what I got out of this month’s issue:

  • Did you know that tangerines contain a flavonoid called ‘tangeretin’ that may help protect against heart disease, Parkinson’s disease and cancer?
  • New items we have on sale all month: Mamma Chia, Liberte 0% Greek Yogurt, Q.bel Wafer Bars, Talbotts Teas, evol Flatbreads, Natures Organic Freeze Dried Fruit
  • Garlic helps lower cholesterol and fight inflammation, plus a super easy recipe called Easy Roasted Garlic that is a delicious topping on baked potatoes

With winter beckoning us to snuggle in for the season, there’s no better way to enjoy a snowy winters eve than with a cup of Peace Coffee Snowshoe Brew. Their coffee is always fresh, roasted to perfection and offers deep, diverse flavors that’ll keep you coming back for more. Locally owned and giving fair trade a very good name, Peace Coffee travels the world over to find and work with their coffee growers, offering instruction and support to grow the perfect bean. Plus, they deliver to many of our stores on bicycles and in rain, sleet or snow! How cool is that?

Searching the world for sustainable seafood

A few weeks ago I was in Tofino, British Columbia, visiting an aquaculture farm called Creative Salmon. Last week I traveled to Santiago Chile to attend a sustainable aquaculture conference. My travels are just part of our commitment for continued research and education regarding sustainable seafood.

Rick Jefferies, broker for Creative Salmon; me; and Tim Rundle, general manager at Creative Salmon, on the boat heading out to the ponds.

There’s a lot to learn on the subject of sustainable seafood, and I’m fortunate to work for a company that is willing to seek the world over to bring the best in products and education.

Our interest in Creative Salmon was peeked when we heard that they do not use antibiotics in their market salmon, which for farmed salmon is quite unusual. We also heard that they are about to be Canada’s first certified organic salmon farm once the Canadian Organic Standards are passed. The trip was to see it all first hand.
